Switching-mode fluid power supply + Continuously Variable Transmission + regenerative brake


1. The inspiration of switching-mode power supply

Electrons flow and oil flow are both flow movement, many properties are similar. Why not to take advantage by mimicking the mature application of electrons flow for immature application of oil flow, or more general, any fluid flow?

Copycatting electronics for hydraulics is easy way to research switching-mode boost/buck DC-DC hydraulic power converter, as show in the figure.

The equivalent pairs:

capacitor = accumulator

inductance = hose (coil)

switching triode = electromagnetic valve

diode = check valve

In real world, there is already hydraulic boost application, e.g. the ram pump can automatically move low water uphill to higher location.

In fact, the key is "water hammer effect", which is equivalent to electromagnetic induction, or say "electrons hammer effect" in my words.

Unfortunately, in portable dimension, it is hard to use hydraulic hose coil to copycat an inductor, because of many technical hurdles. Anyway I do hope some genius guys can overcome it.

In my invention, I use other switching way, fluid oscillator & special mechanism to gain the same effect.

By the way, switching mode power supply is a great invention, enabling modern information technology, as well as saving lots of silicon steels + copper + aluminum, so as to indirectly protect Earth, also it improves everyone's life quality. I think it deserves a Nobel Prize, as even the invention of blue LED is awarded the laurel.

Following typical data center would be impossible, if there were no invention of switching mode power supply, because the linear power supply is extremely low efficient, and disallows large voltage fluctuation of input.

2. Almost ready for market -- micro grid of high pressure oil power distribution

Something always prevailed earlier than other thing, for example, enterprise-wide micro grid of 600 VAC or pneumatic power distribution, such as vehicle repair shop, milking parlor, automobile production line, etc.

In whatever application of pneumatic distribution , the principle is a micro grid of air compressor + tank + hoses-network, as shown below:

Pneumatic system is low pressure, so its power density is humble, and air motor is inferior than electric motor.

Even such low pressure < 150 psi, those already in service air-grids render large pressure fluctuation from 80 psi to 150 psi. Anyway the pressure switch is cheap.

Can you take the dare to deploy enterprise- or community-wide hydraulic micro grid with high pressure about 4000 psi?

The high power density is far higher than electricity, so small hydraulic motors can replace electric motors, and many heavy duty tasks can be easily done by hydraulic system.

My breakthrough invention of switching mode fluid power supply can make above dream come true, as well as less than 5% pressure ripple. The ripple, or say stability, is even equivalent to regular hydro grid.

With the invention, maybe not only the microgrid, but also electricity midrange distribution can be replaced by hydraulic equivalence. Though long distance distribution is not feasible, because of potential high pressure loss, unless boost stations are in proper places.

Municipal water can deliver to households, why cannot 4000 psi hydraulic oil flow via exclusive infrastructure? I believe no problem.

If community deployment is controversial, factory is definitely good enough to repel the conventional 600V AC 3-phase hydro, as hydraulic motors are safer & more compact than electric motors for same power rating.

Also specially good for military camps or radar arrays or headquarters.

Renewable energy can also easily feed in the oil grid, e.g. photovoltaic cells can power DC motor of hydraulic pump. In comparison with regular micro grid feed-in, where AC phase angle alignment is very complicated and expensive, promisingly the DC hydraulic feed-in is so simple and cheap!

Profound influence will also sweep many other industries, e.g. automobiles, transportation, renewables, Energy Storage, etc.

I am organizing consortium to promote this promising cleantech. Following entities are preferred: makers of hydraulic parts (valves, cylinders, etc.), power distributors, fluid power solution providers, vehicles markers (cars, trucks, excavators, etc.), renewable energy developers, institutions or universities.


3. Automobile application -- regenerative brake

How many fossil fuel is wasted by emergent brake?

Assuming a car weight 1000 kg, running at 100km/h, then abruptly brake to stop, kinetic energy 0.5*1000*(100,000/3600)^2 = 386 kJ will become waste heat;

The regular efficiency is 20% from fuel nozzle to wheel, so the 386 kJ kinetic is equivalent to 1930 kJ heat;

The average gasoline (density 0.75 kg/L) heat value 45 MJ/kg or 34 MJ/L, so the 1930 kJ heat, or say one time brake is equivalent to 0.057L or 57 ml or 57 cc.

Now, just unleash your imagination:

For other vehicles:

20 tons heavy truck = 1 L/B (Liter Per Braking)

10000 tons cargo train = 570 L/B

Therefore, please don't suicide by jumping in front of the train, as it is not a green way to the Heaven :(

For example of Beijing City of China: averagely, 800,000 running vehicles on road per day, 20 times braking action/day, thus about 800 tons/day waste or 800*2.3= 1840 tons/day CO2 emission for only use of brakes.

Now EV & hybrid automobiles can reclaim brake energy, so it is high time to implement regenerative powertrain for the major existence of non-hybrid internal combustion engine vehicles!

For all new manufactured roadworthy vehicles, regenerative brake must be imperative, become standard function, not optional, no more excuse of exemption! Laws anywhere in the world should regulate this mandatory requirement.

The automakers default all vehicle owners the very important function -- the regenerative brake, all vehicles deserve it, and this situation must stop, further this function check must be cashed as soon as possible!

5. Invention for job or partner or investor or transferee

I have economic whole solution of regenerative brake powertrain for Technology Transfer, comprising the seamless integration of automatic gearless digital hydrostatic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) & energy storage + recovery sub-system, pure mechanical, needless of battery.

Not like those regular unidirectional transmissions, my tranny invention supports both forward use and backward use, or say it is a bi-directional transmission. 

As its parts (mostly cylinders) are connected by flexible hydraulic hoses, therefore deployment of transmission can be stretchable for any dimension, so as to facilitate front or rear or 4-wheel drive.

Traditional tranny looks like a box, but mine is amorphous, every parts visible & accessible, easy to repair or replace. Repair/reman of cylinders may be cheaply done with seal glands change. 

For a DIYer, you can even assemble the core with plan & software provided by me.

There is no manual version of my tranny.

Though it is of type automatic, my powertrain runs without a conventional torque converter.

Powertrain = 1st drive + tranny + last drive. No rotary but reciprocal motion in tranny, even pump & motor in the two drives can be needless by using crank-rod mechanism. All cylinder's rod speed < 0.5 m/s at any time as per hydraulic good practice, and max tire speed 44 m/s or 160km/h.

My disruptive invention enables affordable mechanical uni-drive to well function regenerative brake! 

With addition of last piece of puzzle, the green function - regenerative brake will serve all three modes: electrical uni-drive, hybrid drive, mechanical uni-drive, and then mankind can disburdenedly continue to enjoy the wonderful fossil fuel powered vehicles with due responsibility.

Not only automobile application, the hydraulic CVT is also the GATEWAY to enable all non-battery energy storage systems, such as types of Flywheel, Compressed Air, etc. Because of this reason, many prior ventures failed at last, no matter which magnate funded, for example, the Bill Gates funded Lightsail Energy Company was shut down last year (click the link for detail).
